Young boy standing next to a gun in Queens Park, Maryborough, around 1909. The plaque on the side of the gun reads, in part: 'This gun, found on the island of Mabuiag in Torres Straits, was presented by John Douglas to the Mayor & -? of Maryborough, 1st January, 187?'. The gun was later moved in to the Maryborough Town Hall.
'The gun was a gift to the city from the Premier of Queensland, John Douglas. It was found on the Torres Strait island of Mobiag and was most likely used by the vessels of the Dutch East India Company during the seventeenth century. It was presented as a response to the criticism that the town had no clock. The gun was first fired on 21 March 1878.' (Information taken from: Walkabout - Maryborough, retrieved 16 January 2003, from <http://www.walkabout.com.au/locations/QLDMaryborough.shtml>).

The boy is wearing a belted jacket over shorts, with long socks and a wide-brimmed hat.
