'On the hard', ex-HMAS Whyalla is the pride of the town. Built in Whyalla during WWII, she served along with over 50 other 'Australian Mine Sweepers' (corvettes) effectively and with distinction in the Royal Australian Navy. After a long and varied career in and out of the service she was purchased by the Whyalla City Council for preservation in 1984. The exercise to carry her to her final resting place was difficult and daunting, but a worthy effort. Guided tours take visitors over the ship which remains pretty much as she was during war time service. She is one of only two of the class preserved for posterity.
