The Roper River Bar is the first available crossing 150 Km from the mouth of the river. In October 1845 Leichhardt, on his journey from Brisbane to Victoria Settlement, tried to cross the river lower down but lost horses and most of his specimens before successfully crossing at this spot.

This well guarded road house and a caravan/camping area are the only established services at the crossing, although the crossing gives access to Ngukurr 30 Km away. Ths is a popular fishing base.

This monument is to Leichhardt's crossing and the early mission people. The area was settled in 1871 although the first Police Station was established here in1885. The ruins are of the third set of buildings handed over to the Aborigines in 1985 and burnt down in 1991.

The first Police Station was a bark hut built in 1885 and eaten by white ants. This is the second one, built with currugated iron on an iron frame on a cement slab. It only has withstood cyclones, floods, fire and termites.

Ths is the grave of 'Roper Tommy', a much loved and respected black tracker who died in 1933.
