Adventure Bay was named by Captain Tobias Furneaux after his vessel 'Adventure' in 1773. Bligh of 'Bounty' fame visited in 1788 and 1792 and planted apple trees and grape vines.

By 1829 80-90 men were engaged in whaling from stations set up along the bay. Later, 12 Sawmills operated in the bay and five of the seven ship wrecks recorded were of ships loading timber.

Captain James Cook landed here in 1877 and a cemmemorative column was erected to recognise the Bi Centenary of his visit.

Nearby is the site of a tree blazed by Captain Cook dated 26.1.1777. Comte de Beavoir recorded seeing the tree in his ships log. The remains of the trunk are now in the Bligh Museum in Adventure Bay.
