Oil Painting from 1855-57
ARMSTRONG'S DIGGINGS.-NEW RUSH.-Hearing of new diggings near Mount Ararat, I resolved to start to look at them. I found the nearest road to be by Mount Cole, which you keep on till you reach Richardson's station, when the road branches off. This rush is about four miles from Mount Ararat, across the bush, and eight miles by the beaten track. The distance from Fiery Creek to Armstrong's diggings by the road is thirty five miles. These diggings are reputed to be very rich ; a lead has been struck here which is proving to be much like the old lead, Mount Ararat. The favorite place lies in a large gully here, between pretty high ranges the lead that was struck was between this and Ararat, on a beautiful quartz hill. The sinking is through bright quartz and cement, in layers. The road from Fiery Creek is black with people, drays, &c. Provisions are very scarce here, which always is the case in a new rush. Parties going from Fiery Creek will find it will make two miles difference by taking a straight direction out under Mount Cole, from thence to Mount Mistake, where the road will take you to the
diggings. Everything in the shape of provisions is very dear here, also miners' tools. Many of the diggers positively told us that they had ate cabbage only for two or three days, of which there is an abundant supply at the station. Bread is 4s. 6d. per loaf.-Correspondent Times..
